Title: Molten metal deposition as an additive manufacturing technology for aluminium alloys
Dr. Jonas Galle is CEO of ValCUN that has developed the Molten Metal Deposition technology. The main is bringing metal additive manufacturing towards industrial production. Jonas has more than 7 years in metal AM, has dealt with complex engineering problems in past professional activities. He is close connection with industry to understand their needs and struggles with existing AM technologies
Metal additive manufacturing is lagging behind on the adoption for industrial production. Despite the well-recognized benefits, the total production, handlings and integration efforts are the main barriers, especially for aluminum alloys. Molten Metal Deposition is a new metal AM technology that tackles these barriers. This is realized by the use of wire feedstock, absence of lasers, reduced support structures & thermal stresses, allowing automation and processing of high strength aluminium alloys (6xxx & 7xxx).
The material properties such as interlayer fusion quality quality, elongation and tensile strength displayed consistency and potential for innovative applications in different industrial fields. Furthermore, microstructure analyses show cooldown rate of an order of magnitude less than Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing, suggesting the reduced presence of residual stresses & deformations.
This presentation provides an overview on how the nature of MMD technology can achieve economical industrial production. Additionally, the material characterization & properties will be presented on how this relates to the performance and cost of applications.
