Drug Resistance in Cancer

Drug resistance continues to be the principal limiting factor to achieving cures in patients with cancer. The problem of drug resistance in cancer has strong similarities to the field of infectious disease, in that both disciplines are challenged by highly proliferating intrinsic or extrinsic aggressors.

Combination chemotherapy thus became a new paradigm for cancer therapy that led to the development of increasingly complex regimens. In addition, a number of different approaches to dose intensity, including shorter-interval administrations of chemotherapy or higher doses of chemotherapy9\ with growth factor support to prevent continued bone marrow suppression, resulted in improved success of these therapies by preventing early regrowth of tumors.
