Biography

Dr. Akwe obtained her medical degree from the University of Perugia in Italy. After Medical school, she obtained a masters degree in public health at the University of Manchester in England, after which she worked for the World Health Organization. She completed her internal medicine residency at Morehouse School of Medicine. After Residency, she completed a year as chief resident after which she joined the Atlanta Veteran Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) team.

Dr. Akwe is an academic hospitalist at the Atlanta VA Medical Center. She is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine in and she is a fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Akwe is the lead for Simulation at the VAMC and Chair of the simulation committee, and champion for Tele-ICU Implementation. She is also the champion for inpatient medicine order sets and has created more than forty order sets which are widely used by staff physicians and residents at the VAMC. She is currently assisting other VAMCs across the country in creating inpatient order sets for patient care.

Dr. Akwe has received several awards including the Reginald and Ryan Award for Excellence in Community Service, 2009, National Medical Association Leadership Training Award, 2010, Community Service Award from GA American College of Physicians, 2010, Emory Department of Hospital Medicine Directors Award in Appreciation for Outstanding Service, 2013 and The J. Willis Hurst Outstanding Bedside Teacher Award given by Georgia American College of Physicians (GA ACP), 2014.

Dr. Akwe is interested in medical education and quality medical care through the creation of order sets and simulation.
