The neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a group of mainly chronic illnesses identified as causing considerable morbidity and mortality typically amongst the world's poorest populations and which have also been shown to promote poverty. The effect of the NTDs as a group is such that they have been considered to be part of a group of four, together with HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria.
