Abstract

Abstract

Non-Communicative Diseases (NCDs) present one of the greatest challenges to the future of public health. Most NCDs such as Diabetes, Dementia, Cancer and Cardio-Vascular diseases are lifetsyle related. This presents particular problems for elderly care because improvements in longevity over the last 50 years have meant that people are living beyond retirement age, often in poor health, and present a growing cost burden at a time when the percentage of working population is falling. This combination is putting pressure on the future sustainability of public health services.

Enabling technologies such as Artificial Intelligence combined with increasingly sophisticated consumer wearable technologies has the potential to support preventative healthcare by facilitating behaviour change, detecting problems early, providing rich medical history data and encouraging personal responsibility for health. This presentation focuses on the application of digital technologies, including AI, for preventative healthcare and explores some of the challenges and opportunities this presents for the future of Healthcare and the implications for the Nursing Profession.
