HIV Retroviruses, Transmission, and Infection

The retrovirus known as Human ImmunodeficiencyVirus (HIV) causes Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in humans. HIV related to simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), a retrovirus found in chimpanzees and gorillas. HIV belongs to retroviruses called lent viruses. HIV infection is required to develop AIDS, the actual definition of AIDS is the development of a low CD4 cell count or any one of a long list of complications of HIV infection so-called Opportunistic Infections. The common ways in which HIV is spreading throughout the world include sexual contact and by mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy. The spread of HIV by exposure to infected blood normally results from sharing needles, as in those used for illicit drugs. There are three stages of HIV infection.
