It is the branch of chemistry mainly deals with the chemical synthesis, structure, chemical and physical properties of polymers and macromolecules. The first synthetic polymer, a phenol-formaldehyde polymer, was introduced under the name Bakelite by Leo Baekeland in 1909. They are formed by linking monomers through chemical reaction called polymerization.
