Biography

Dr. Aw trained in internal medicine at the Singapore General Hospital. He has specialist certifications in Internal Medicine from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Royal College of Physicians, UK. He underwent further training in laboratory medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA. He has specialist certification in Pathology from the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. Currently, he is Director (Chemical Pathology) in the Department of Laboratory Medicine at Changi General Hospital and Medical Director, Singapore Institute of Advanced Medicine Clinical Laboratory. Since 2014 he is the Clinical Senior Lecturer (Medicine) at the NUS School of Medicine. He is also Attending Physician at Raffles Hospital and Asia Health Partners. At the NUS Medical School from 1980-2006, he attained the rank of full Professor (Pathology) and served as its Vice-Dean (1994-2002). He was Chief (Laboratory Medicine) of the National University Hospital from 1988-2002 and Medical Director of the Alexandra Hospital (1995-2000). From 2006-2010 he was a part-time staff at Monash Medical School as Professor (Chemical Pathology, Malaysia campus) and Honorary Professor (Medicine, Australia campus). He has published widely and delivered over 300 invited lectures in congresses and symposia in 25 countries. He has received several distinguished awards - Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians & Scientists USA Young Investigator Award (1982, 1983), Government of France Distinguished Visitor Award (1985), Singapore Association of Clinical Biochemists Boehringer Mannheim Award (1988), National Science Council of Taiwan Distinguished Visitor Award (1990), Singapore Society of Pathology Becton-Dickinson Award (1996), Chinese Association of Laboratory Medicine ‘Dade-Behring’ Distinguished Overseas Chinese Scholar Award (2000), Annual Oration, Indian Society of Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine, New Delhi (2011), Razi Lecture, Pakistan Association of Pathology, Islamabad (2012). He is on the editorial boards of several journals including Annals of Thyroid Research, Malaysian Journal of Medical Science, Indonesian Biochemistry Journal, Proceedings of Singapore Healthcare, and EC Gynecology.
