Title: The Impact of Motivational Interviewing and Diabetes Self-Education on Patients Diagnosed with Diabetes and Depression
Diabetes
education and motivational interviewing interventions are well-known therapies
for diabetes and co-morbid depression. This study reviewed the impact of
motivational interviewing and diabetes self-education on patients with diabetes
and co-morbid depression. Concluding study participants included 11 adult
primary care patients who attended at least four of six motivational
interviewing and diabetes education group sessions. The Patient Health
Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities Measure
(SDSCA) were administered to participants at the beginning of each group
session. Weight for each participant was taken at the beginning of each group
session. Upon completion of motivational interviewing and diabetes
self-education groups, patients demonstrated reductions in symptoms of
depression, weight, and improved diabetes self-care activities. It was
predicted and found that active group participants improved diabetes self-care,
weight, and depression. Participants enhanced their motivation toward proper
diabetes self-care and healthy lifestyle changes, which are vital to the health
and wellness of patients living with diabetes.
