Title: Workplace Stress and Mental Well-Being: The Mediating Role of Worklife Balance Among Nurses

Background and aims: Nursing profession is one of the strongest pillar of healthcare sectors in Nigeria, and affronted with different levels of work-place stress, cum sentimental demands which could deeply affect their mental well-being. Work-place stress is climacteric to nursing practices and behaviour as it directly influences mental well-being which in turn may likely determines patient care quality. Therefore, this study examines the path way effect of workplace stress on mental well-being, and the intermediary effects of work-life balance in ameliorating the relationship.
Method: A quantitative cross-sectional survey design was
conducted from twenty selected private and public hospitals in Osogbo and
Ibadan, Nigeria. Multistage sampling techniques was utilized and and five hundred nurses
aged between 26 to 55 years were recruited. This research study accurately use validated
and standardized measuring scale for data generation.
Results: The statistical analysis through Process indicates that workplace
stress significantly and positively predicted work–life balance (? = 1.50, SE
= 0.08, t = 18.55, p < .001), and mental well-being (? =
1.13, SE = 0.06, t = 18.72, p < .001). Work–life
balance positively and significant predict mental well-being (? = 0.42, SE
= 0.04, t = 11.89, p < .001) which in turn significantly modify
better mental well-being outcomes among nurses. The mediation analysis
confirmed that work-life balance (? = 0.63, BootSE
= 0.05), with a 95% bootstrap confidence interval that did not include zero
[0.53, 0.73] mediate the relationship between workplace stress and mental
health. Suggesting that better work-life balance suppress the effect of
workplace stress on mental well-being, and contributed to better mental
well-being. Conclusion/Recommendations: The outcomes recommend organizational
policies that will foster work-life balance such as flexible working
arrangements and enabling working conditions to enhance the mental well-being
of nurses.
