Title: Leveraging nursing skills for entrepreneurship: expanding professional opportunities beyond traditional roles
Maya Green is a Registered Nurse with experience in cardiology, critical care nursing, nurse entrepreneurship, and study skills education. Her work focuses on identifying and translating nursing skills to economic market value, validating income pathways, and choosing next steps that fit a nurse’s income goals and capacity. She created Pass The Floor to support nursing students with study strategy and clinical judgment and developed The Options Accelerator to help nurses explore ways to use their skills in new career and income paths
Nurses seeking additional income are often pointed to picking up extra shifts, getting a PRN job, or seeking a new (higher paying) job. This is because these methods are the traditional way to increase income. However, nursing expertise is comprised of specialized knowledge, teaching, communication, clinical judgment, care coordination, advocacy, and coaching people through complex situations. These abilities transfer to different settings beyond healthcare. This work helps nurses identify what they know and do well, consider who might value that expertise, and choose a practical option to explore for additional income. Examples include showing how nursing skills and experience translate into education, services, digital or physical products, projects, and/or partnerships. Participants will discover where their expertise may be useful, learn what people or organizations need, and what next step is worth testing. Nurses don’t have to restrict themselves to picking up extra shifts or seeking a new job; they can start with what they already know how to do and explore the next step.
